Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Multiple Sclerosis

Brenda - diagnosed with MS five years ago.

After five MS exacerbations in four years the disease was getting the best of me.  I was exhausted, bloated, couldn't focus well, and walking even short distances wore me out.  My husband researched hyperbaric oxygen treatments and discovered HHI when he was staying nearby for work.  When I told my neurologist that I was planning on trying it he said, "If it has the potential to help and won't harm you, go ahead."

Not everyone may experience the incredible healing that I have, but is shows that the potential can be there.  I started on a Monday.  At that time I was on six different pills for various symptoms in addition to my daily Copaxone injection.  After my second day of treatment my husband noticed that he didn't have to walk nearly as slowly for me to keep up with him.  Heat and MS are a bad combination.  The heat intensifies symptoms and may bring about new ones.  At the end of the first week I went to the KC zoo.  I walked at a good pace for 2 1/2 hours in 95 degree heat!

When reviewing my last MRI, my doctor said there had been no new activity, and then said, "Actually, this one looks better than the last one."  Although hyperbaric treatment is not recognized by the current medical establishment for treatment of MS and is symptoms, it has proven beneficial to me, and my doctor concurs.  I still have MS. There is no cure.  I do, however, have a quality of life I didn't think would be possible.  Since beginning hyperbaric oxygen treatment I have had no relapses, have been taken off all medications for symptoms, and was able to spend 10 days in Greece without the fear of symptoms showing up or being so far from my neurologist.  I have even lost all the steroid weight!

The staff of HHI is highly knowledgeable and extremely helpful.  When my husband first inquired about HHI on my behalf they immediately sent a packet of information that answered all our questions.  I recommend trying hyperbaric treatment for those living with MS.  As my doctor says, "If it has the potential to help and won't harm you, go ahead."

Linda - 50 yr old female diagnosed with MS 9 years ago.

Dear Hyperbaric Healing Institute,

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in January 1995.   Since that time, I have progressively become more debilitated.  I was walking very slowly with a cane to maintain my balance and my energy level was low, I tired quickly from the simplest of tasks.  I had to watch how much energy I exerted, overdoing anything would result in exhaustion and resting for at least a day.

In January 2003, I did my first hyperbaric oxygen treatment.  After the first treatment, I walked out of the chamber and I no longer felt the “burning pain” in my feet and legs.  The treatments have steadily improved my energy level, balance, memory and endurance.  On March 28, 2003, I walked into the Hyperbaric Healing Institute without the use of my cane!!  My energy level has soared and I have regained the “sensation” in my hands.  The burning “pins and needles” pain in my feet and legs has decreased.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is as easy as the activities available during the treatment - playing cards, watching a movie or just reading a book.  With the treatments, I have experienced no side effects.  As far as I am concerned, this has been a lifesaver for me – it has definitely improved my quality of life!

                                                Sincerely,

                                                           Linda

Fall 2004 Update

My “maintenance” treatment that I receive every 3-4 weeks at HHI has made drastic improvements in my quality of life.  Just over two years ago driving a car was difficult for me, I would only venture out no more than 10 miles from home.  Just this summer I drove from Kansas City to Columbia, a 2 hour trip, with no problem.  Also, this past summer has been very stressful for me but I feel with HBOT my MS symptoms have stayed in-check.   Just last week I was cleaning out some boxes and found a note from 3 years ago, my handwriting was very bad and it was so difficult for me to write because I had lost so much feeling in my hand.  Now most of the feeling is back and I have no problem writing.

Spring 2007 Update

Linda has continued to do maintenance treatments as needed (about 1 every 3-4 weeks) and has not had any regression due to her MS.

I experienced my first Multiple Sclerosis symptoms in November, 1994 with an official diagnosis the summer of 1995.  I have tried several forms of treatment but none as successful or effortless as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.  During my research of various treatments for MS, I read of a woman in England who raved about the success of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) for herself and for all those struggling with the effects of MS in Europe.  I was unsuccessful at locating an HBOT chamber in the Midwest or the nation that would treat a person with MS at that time, and so I surrendered the idea of ever experiencing HBOT.

Webster’s dictionary defines godsend as “a desirable or needed thing or event that comes unexpectedly”; this is what the Hyperbaric Healing Institute is to me and my husband.  When I first began HBOT, the summer of 2003, I had been bothered for years with severely numb toes.  I had a blurry spot on my left eye as a result of an MS attack from over a year before, as well as balance problems and bladder control issues.  The day following my very first treatment I regained the feeling in all of my toes.  Within a few weeks of treatment my balance had improved dramatically, the sense of urgency with my bladder had subsided, and my eye sight was fully restored with an added benefit of deeper sleep through the nights.  Though HBOT is not the cure for MS, the dramatic results it has had on my health has been far superior to anything I could have hoped for or have experienced with any of the other treatments I have tried, or even heard of.  I am able to maintain these improvements with weekly to monthly treatments.

Due to a congenital condition, I had my right hip replaced April 15, 2002 and my left hip replaced November 10, 2003.  I was able to begin HBOT as soon as I left the hospital in November, 2003 and it made a dramatic difference in my recovery as opposed to the recovery of my right hip replacement in 2002.  The side effects of the anesthetic were greatly diminished – I felt more like myself within a week, verses the months of anguish I experienced after the first surgery.  HBOT enabled me to experience a deeper, more restful sleep, and expedited the healing process, including the healing of the actual incision.  The treatments have also loosened my muscles that previously were unable to stretch due to pain.  This enabled me to have a more normal gait.

The Hyperbaric Healing Institute has truly been a godsend.  It has given me hope for a healthier life and has blessed me with some true friendships.  Thank you David and Lisa!  I fear I will never be able to express my sincere gratitude for the sacrifices you have made to establish this service – know that our deepest appreciation is there and we love you!
